Viterbo has for centuries been called The City of Popes, in memory of the period in which the papal seat was moved to this city, and it still bears the signs of that splendor, but it can boast even more ancient origins. County capital of Etruscan origin and of great historical traditions, Viterbo preserves a monumental structure among the most important ones in Lazio: aristocratic palaces, monuments rich in fascinating works of art, suggestive medieval quarters, churches and cloisters from various eras, slender towers and elegant fountains made of peperino (a brown or grey volcanic tuff with dark-colored inclusions, suggestive of pepper-corns).
