In the mid 18th century, Pope Benedict XIV granted the lands of Pianiano, unhealthy and difficult to cultivate, to a group of Albanian families from Shkoder, who had asked the Pope for help in fleeing religious persecution. The medieval church dedicated to the patron saint San Sigismondo still towers above the heart of Pianiano; inside it a fine holy water font, decorated with three Farnese lilies, is a precious remnant of the period the village belonged to the Farnese family and the Duchy of Castro.
