La Cannara is a very ancient building whose origins can be traced back to the Roman era. There is certain news of it from the Middle Ages onwards related to its peculiar destination (and perhaps only purpose, at least originally): eels fishing. The river Marta, in flowing from Lake Bolsena towards the sea is forced to pass “through” the Cannara (in fact a House-Bridge) wherein, through a system of grids (formerly made from reeds, in italian “canna”, hence the name Cannaia or Cannara) huge quantities of the delicious fish were caught. For this very reason La Cannara was a property of high value that belonged to the Church and later to powerful local families. Here are some of the historical images that you can also admire on the walls of the Residence. The story of a centenary tradition, a monument of ichthyic archeology.
